The statue of Leonidas – Thermopylae
Thermopylae is located just 20 minutes outside the city of Lamia and is a historical reference point for every visitor. The focal point of the area is the brass statue of King Leonidas wielding a spear and a shield. The form of King Leonidas was based on an ancient warrior unearthed by the British Archaeological School in 1920 and was attributed to King Leonidas. The statue is surrounded by two marble personified figures of river Evrotas and of the tallest mountain of Peloponnese, Taygetos. The Center of Historical Information of Thermopylae, the Monument of the 700 Thespians and the hot springs “hidden” by the seas passage, make a full tour of the area.

Thermopylae is the most historical site a visitor will come across while travelling from Athens to Lamia, since this is the place where the famous battle between the Greeks and the Persians took place – an epitomy of the Greek-Persian wars.
Thermopylae is home to the brass statue of Leonidas wielding a spear and a shield and was created by the famous sculptor Vasos Falireas in 1955 with donations from 300 expatriated Spartans of America.
The king of Sparta, having by his side the personified river Evrotas and the imposing mountain of Taygetos, invites the traveler to explore the historical events.
The battle of Thermopylae took place in 480 BC between the Greeks and the Persians during the second Persian invasion in Greece. Scenes from the conflict run along every corner of the monument.
In 1920, the British Archaeological School unearthed findings which defined the historic course of Europe. One of them was an ancient finding attributed to a warrior and then related to the figure of King Leonidas and inspired the curving of the landmark statue of the area.
The Centre of Historical Information of Thermopylae is an interactive and innovative museum, narrating the course of history, which alongside the Monument of the 700 Thespians and the curative hot springs make the entire area one of unique interest.
