Building of the Region of Central Greece - Elefthe...
It has been declared a listed monument and is located in the center of Lamia. It was built around 1925 as a branch of the National Bank of Greece in Lamia. During the Occupation from 1940 to 1944, it was requisitioned and initially served as the headquarters of the Italians and later as a German garrison. It survived the relentless bombing of Lamia by German airplanes on April 18, 1941. After the Liberation and until April 1945, the ELAS Headquarters were located there, and in 1946, the offices of the military administration of Lamia were accommodated. In 1950, the bank sold it to the Greek state, and it housed the Prefecture of Fthiotida and later the Region of Central Greece.
Building of the Region of Central Greece - Eleftherias Square
In the center of Lamia, at the oldest square, Eleftherias Square, stands the building of the Region of Central Greece. A true gem located right at the heart of the city, where most cafes are situated. It is a beloved meeting place for the people of Lamia and its visitors.
The imposing building was constructed around 1925 as a branch of the National Bank of Greece in Lamia and operated as a bank until 1955. During the period of the Occupation from 1940 to 1944, the building was requisitioned by the conquerors and initially served as the headquarters of the Italians and later as a German garrison. After the Liberation and the end of World War II, until April 1945, the ELAS Headquarters were located on the first floor. In 1946, the offices of the military administration of Lamia were accommodated there. It briefly operated again as a National Bank, and on the first floor, there was a residence for the bank's director and assistant director. In 1950, the bank sold it to the Greek state, and it housed the Prefecture of Fthiotida until 2011 when the Prefectures were abolished. Since then, it has served as the seat of the Region of Central Greece. Although most services of the Region of Central Greece have now been relocated to the building that previously housed the Regional Support Division (MERYP), some services that continue to operate are still located in the historic building of Eleftherias Square.
On its grand facade, visitors can discern some "scars" on its beautiful marbles. These are the marks left by the German airplanes on April 18, 1941, when the city of Lamia was relentlessly bombed. The building was saved, but the marks are still visible today.
This distinctive and exceptionally beautiful building was declared a listed monument by the Ministry of Culture in 1991.
