General Hospital of Lamia
Lamia General Hospital is a significant pillar of healthcare in central Greece, providing high-quality medical services to the local community and visitors with a history dating back centuries. Initially located in the area known as 'Taratsa,' where the hospital stands today, it operated as a 'Sanatorium' where many tuberculosis patients from all over central Greece received treatment. Today, the hospital boasts modern facilities, equipment, and the capability to address a wide range of healthcare needs. In addition to healthcare services, the hospital plays a crucial role in education and research, collaborating with local universities and educational institutions.
General Hospital of Lamia
The General Hospital of Lamia is one of the most important medical centers in the region of Phthiotida and the entire Central Greece. Its history dates back many years to the 19th century, during the Ottoman Empire. It was founded in 1946 in the area known as 'Taratsa,' located to the north of the city, as a monumental project led by Efstathios Malamidas, a prominent political figure in Lamia.
The choice of the 'Taratsa' area, where the historical 'Lymokatharistirion' (sanitation facility) once stood, was significant. Its establishment coincided with a challenging period for the country, both in terms of health, as pulmonary tuberculosis was a widespread scourge causing numerous deaths annually. The new hospital provided essential services in this field, filling the gap left by the destruction of the 'Mountain Antituberculous Sanatorium' at the Antiniotissa monastery a few years earlier during the German occupation. As the new institution was not just a sanatorium but a hospital-sanatorium, it not only addressed this deficiency but also created more opportunities to combat tuberculosis.
The 'Sanatorium of Lamia,' equipped with modern medical services for its time and benefiting from the favorable climatic conditions of the region, became a place of treatment for many patients from all over central Greece. The area is still colloquially referred to as the 'Sanatorium' by the locals, although it is not officially registered as such.
Until its infrastructure was fully completed, the hospital operated in various buildings within the city for extended periods. For the most part, it functioned on Fleming Street, where the Lamia City Hall is currently located, from October 1948 for 58 years.
Today, innovative educational programs and clinical practices have been developed within the hospital, allowing medical and nursing staff to gain valuable experience and knowledge within its modern and continuously upgraded facilities. It offers departments for executive medicine, endoscopies, surgical interventions, and many other healthcare services."
