Old Aqueduct of Lamia
The old Aqueduct of Lamia is located on the northern side of the city, in the area ofAgia Paraskevi, approximately half an hour's walk from the Taratsa settlement. Through an easily accessible path, under the shade of centuries-old plane trees and tall pine trees, you reach the beautiful structure of the reservoir (Aqueduct), designated as a historic preserved monument, as it is considered a characteristic example of a special category of construction.
Constructed in the late 19th century, under the mayoralty of Nikos Kritsas, it was Lamia's first aqueduct. Until then, Lamia's residents were supplied with minimal amounts of water from springs, wells, and cisterns. The aqueduct collected water from the sources of Taratsa and Anavra, which, through a stone-built conduit, gathered in the reservoir and then, via another conduit, reached the city's internal network. Later, during the mayoralty of Spyros Trakas, the aqueduct's network in Taratsa was improved as the original pipes were replaced with iron ones. The construction of the aqueduct, gradually supplying the entire city, significantly contributed to improving the quality of life for its residents.
The stone bridge with its impressive arch, the Aqueduct with its exceptional masonry, the river alternating between shallow and deeper sections, and the waterfall at the end of the route gain more admirers each year.
In this location, blending history, art, and nature, you often find many residents of Lamia taking their solitary walks there. Also, groups, friends, and associations organize excursions in the area, either to admire and analyze the architecture and history of the Aqueduct or to combine it with nature-loving outings for observing plants, birds, and the region's wildlife.
The old aqueduct of Lamia is a monument reminding us of the importance of proper preservation and promotion of our cultural wealth.
