Laou Square
Laou Square is one of the four central squares of Lamia around which the city's life revolves.
In January 1897, it was named LaouSquare (transl. People’s Square) because for many years, a large number of laborers gathered there early in the morning every day in search of work. Throughout history, it has been a meeting place for the people, the ordinary people of the city who frequented it either for work or for their leisure. Sources suggest that initially, it was named Hermes Square because of the annual fairs that took place there, the history of which dates back to ancient times.
According to historical sources, a significant river once flowed through the city of Lamia, and a recent excavation for reconstruction in People's Square revealed a deep gorge with running water. The plane trees in the square are also significant witnesses to the existence of underground streams in the area. Scientists speculate that these are trees that have survived from the ancient forest, as clones of even older trees, and they have been declared Preserved Natural Monuments due to their size and history.
In the center of the square, the statue of Captain ArisVelouchiotis of the ELAS (Greek People's Liberation Army) stands prominently. Apart from the age-old plane trees, it is adorned with magnificent neoclassical buildings. History reports that the hero of the Greek Revolution in 1821, AthanasiosDiakos, met a martyr's death at this location, and today, his monument and tomb are found in one of the historic narrow streets nearby.
Take a stroll through the beautiful cobblestone alleys, taste the city's famous grilled dishes, and shop for traditional products available in the stores around the square. The fountains in the square flow with abundant clean running water that can refresh you under the shade of the imposing plane trees. Afterwards, you can ascend through the steps and narrow alleys and, following the neoclassical houses, reach Lamia Castle with its unique view.
