Hill of Saint Lukas
The steps from Diakos Square lead visitors to a lush forested area filled with new experiences and attractions. The Hill of Saint Lukas is considered one of the most beautiful spots in the city as it is home to the chapel of Lamia's Patron Saint and holds historical significance for the town's residents.
Specifically, the feast day of Saint Lukas in 1944 coincided with the liberation of the city of Lamia from German forces. Therefore, every year on October 18th, a festive religious ceremony takes place here with the participation of numerous faithful. The Greek-Byzantine church was built as a chapel in 1910, and its architectural structure is cruciform without a dome. The Ministry of Culture, in its efforts to preserve the picturesque area, designated it as a historically preserved monument.
Nature on the Hill of Saint Lukas will reward you at every turn. The lush landscape surrounding the area creates the perfect conditions for a leisurely walk, offering breathtaking views of Mount Oeta, the Maliakos Gulf, and the Spercheios Valley.
The hill comes to life every day as families, groups of friends, students, and scholars take walks in the recreational park, spend time in the playground, or enjoy refreshments at the kiosk.
Continuing the uphill journey, you'll encounter the surrounding forest that leads to the newly-built Church of Saint Lukas and takes you to Isadaki. It's a perfect opportunity for relaxation and exploration of the other hidden gems in the hills of Lamia, including a stop at the striking statue of the Homeric hero Achilles. The statue was crafted by sculptor ZachosBekiaris and was erected in 1982.
