Archaeological Museum of Lamia
Located in the archaeological site of the Castle overlooking the city, the Archaeological Museum of Lamia is housed in a restored barracks that was constructed during the reign of King Otto and served a military purpose until World War II. In 1973, it was handed over to the Ministry of Culture, and in 1984, the Municipality of Lamia took on its restoration to house the Archaeological Museum. The museum was inaugurated on September 25, 1994.
The building has been designated as a preserved structure, allowing only repairs aimed at its preservation and reinforcement.
It houses archaeological findings from the regions of Phthiotis and Evrytania, mostly from excavations conducted mainly in recent years, both rescue and systematic. The majority of these findings come from sanctuaries and cemeteries and include mainly marble sculptures, idols, statues, funerary columns, reliefs, inscriptions, vessels, jewelry, stone and bone tools, coins, artifacts, and objects from daily life. With a visit to its spacious halls, you will journey through time from the Neolithic era to Roman times.
The permanent collection of the Archaeological Museum of Lamia includes a globally unique marble sculpure from the late 4th century BC, dedicated to Artemis Eileithyia, the protector of childbirth. It depicts a scene of a young mother offering a votive to Artemis and is stylistically associated with the PraxiteleanSchool.
From time to time, the museum hosts periodic exhibitions and numerous educational programs for local schools. It has a large conference space where conferences and events with both scientific and cultural themes take place. In the courtyard area, exhibitions, events, concerts, and various cultural activities are organized. The space is included in the Ministry of Culture's program "All of Greece, One Culture." Every year, during the August full moon, the people of Lamia ascend to the museum, are guided through the space by archaeologists, and enjoy themselves under the moonlight with a view of the entire city of Lamia.
