Anopaia Atrapos
The secret passage of Anopaio Atrapos or the Efialtis Path runs 16 kilometers long starting from the Monastery of Damasta. In 480 BC during the battle of Thermopylae Efialtis revealed its location to Xerxes, the Persian king, thus leading the Persian troops to victory. The same path is chosen by plenty of trekkers who make their way down to the monument of Thermopylae, while the Mountain Race is annually held and attracts 300 runners from all over the world.
Anopaia Atrapos
Anopaia Atrapos was a rugged path, a secret passage starting from the gorge of Asopos, almost 1000 metres high in the mountain of Kallidromos. Its course stars from the gorge of Asopos and runs over the villages of Damasta and Elefterochori following the ridge of Thermopylae. Through this passage, Efialtis led the Persian army and ambushed Spartan King Leonidas.
In 480 BC during the battle of Thermopylae Efialtis revealed its location to Xerxes, the Persian king. This resulted in the Persian army ambushing the Greek troops and beating the 300 heroic soldiers, whose destiny was to stay in history for their mighty achievement, their resistance during the battle of Thermopylae.
The spruce-filled path is 16 kilometres long and starts from the Monastery of Damasta.
Today, every necessary action has been taken to upgrade it and use it in order to give prominence to its importance and symbolism. Every year, the Municipality of Lamia and the Trachina Runners organize the Anopaia Atrapos Mountain Race, which attracts 300 runners from all over the world.
Apart from that, the trail is part of a beautiful routine for local trekkers and residents, who follow its scenic route all the way to the Thermopylae monument for pleasure or training.
