The history of the Seven Springs dates back to the distant year of 1877 when they were created at the same location where the largest pre-revolutionary fountain of Lamia was situated, behind the Metropolitan Cathedral of the city. The small square formed by the springs is surrounded by small taverns and ouzeri, creating a unique opportunity for people to explore the old town while enjoying the flavors and aromas of modern Lamia.
The Seven Springs of Lamia
The Seven Springs of Lamia are a landmark of the city, providing refreshment for residents, professionals, visitors, and travelers for over a century. This hidden treasure is located behind the Metropolitan Cathedral, forming a small square among the buildings with small taverns and ouzeri (traditional Greek bars) of the city.
The history of the Seven Springs dates back to the distant year of 1877 when the Municipality of Lamia, under the administration of Mayor Trakas Komnas, decided to create a public space that would provide water for the daily needs of citizens and travelers seeking a place to quench their thirst. The central location near Laou Square and Eleftheria’s Square was chosen as it was close to many shops, hotels, and residences. At that location stood a pre-revolutionary public fountain, which was then the largest in Lamia and consisted of 7 individual springs. Thus, the Seven Springs were created and retained their name to this day.
The Seven Springs are made of marble and gush forth endless, crystal-clear water. For decades, their spouts had the shape of a frog, from whose mouth the water flowed. Despite their replacement, their initial charm remains untouched and engraved in the collective memory of the residents. Above the central spring, there is a stone inscription that reads: '1877 Municipality Expenditure.'
The area of the Seven Springs is not just a space for refreshment but also a place with a rich history and cultural heritage. It is a space where residents and visitors can relax, rejuvenate, and enjoy the tranquility and charm of the old town of Lamia while being in the center of the modern city.
