Kakogianni Astronomical School of Ypati
The Kakogianni Astronomical School is a small scientific “treasure” in the village of Ypati that is worth visiting. It was inaugurated in 2010 as a center for education, research, and the promotion of a love for science among young and old alike.
The school's name derives from the couple Stavros and Irene Kakogiannis from Ypati, who funded the renovation of the space. The inspiration behind the creation of this unique place came from educators GeorgiosSfikas and Kia Tziortzi, who, in collaboration with the Association of Amateur Astronomers of Phthiotida and the local authorities, brought the world of Astronomy closer to every student, educator, and scientist, while making it accessible to every citizen with an interest in this fascinating science.
The Astronomical School is embraced by “The Hercules" Association of Amateur Astronomers of Phthiotida, which, in cooperation with local organizations, strives to take people on journeys into the infinite universe. The association was founded in October 2007 and features the image of the stars forming the constellation of Hercules as its emblem.
Within the modern facilities of the former Primary School of Ypati, every visitor can explore the presentation amphitheater, the observatory, and the planetarium. Activities continue with regular events, seminars, and trips related to Astronomy. Notably, the annual Summer School in Ypati has become a tradition, bringing students into contact with the science of Physics and taking them on a journey through space.
