The castle of Lamia
Located on a rocky hill, looming over the city for hundreds of years, stands one of the most impressive monuments of the city, the Castle of Lamia.
The castle dates from the 5th century BC, and its wall is very well maintained due to constant use and restorations, thus playing a continuous historical role until the 2nd World War.
During the Othonian period, a two-floor rectangular building was erected, used as barracks until the beginning of the 2nd World War. Now, it houses the Archaeological Museum of Lamia and the Conference Center.
The entrance to the castle is from the northeast gate where the visitor is welcomed by the statue of Ministry of Culture, Melina Merkouri. Exhibits from antiquity until the Byzantine period can be found across the courtyard and in the southwest corner lie the remains of a mosque. The Castle or Akrolamia (the edge of Lamia) is the perfect place to gaze at the view of not just the city, but also the valley of Phiothida, the top of Mt Oeta, the legendary Othris, Mt Parnassos, Mt Giona and the Maliakos bay.
Climb up the steps from Laou Square, roam among the old manors of the town, and rest under the pine trees, as do many of the town do.
The Ministry of Culture, the Municipality of Lamia as well as plenty of other hosts, hold various cultural events and conferences at the forecourt of the Castle.
