Damasta - Agathonas - Antinitsa
Religious Triangle
Overview
The city of Lamia is surrounded by many religious tourism destinations inviting pilgrims as well as nature lovers to come and explore the beautiful historic Monasteries of the area. The religious triangle formed between the Damasta, Agathonos and Antinitsa Monasteries offers unique experiences to travelers who decide to visit them.
The Holy Monastery of the Nativity of Theotokos (meaning the Mother of God) of Damasta is located on the northern slopes of Mount Kallidromo and is a women's monastery. The main church of the monastery and the 5 chapels surrounding it, create a small "shelter" with a view of the mountains Oeta and Othrys. The building complex consists of a hostel, a bell tower, an abbot's residence, a guesthouse, and a courtyard leading to the chapel of Saints Constantine and Helen.
As we head east, near the village of Ypati, we encounter the Agathonos Monastery. Some of its' magnificent 16th century frescoes have been preserved despite the damage it suffered during the Ottoman occupation. Important sacred relics, remains and treasures can be found in the Monastery's Museum. The oldest book housed in the Museum dates back to 1551. Today, the Museum of Natural History is located there, showcasing the main species of flora and fauna in the Oeta National Park. Additionally, in the Monastery's breeding facility, visitors can admire a unique habitat with chamois, pheasants, partridges, ducks, and various other bird species, as well as deer and wild sheep.
Continuing this religious and nature loving journey we head to the Antinitsa Monastery, located on the slopes of Mount Othrys. Our religious and nature worship journey continues on the slopes of Mount Othrys, specifically at Antinitsa Monastery. The magnificent frescoes adorning the interior of the church are excellent examples of Byzantine art. The relics of saints displayed for veneration and the icon of the Virgin Mary, considered miraculous, attract believers. Its location offers an exceptional view of the surrounding nature, extending to the sea, making the monastery a beloved destination for those seeking tranquility and spiritual upliftment, both believers and non-believers alike.
